Pope Gregory VIII

Gregory VIII, real name Albertus de Morra (c. 1100 ( 1105 to 1110 );? † December 17, 1187 ) was the October 25, 1187 to Pope. You may not use the same name Gregory VIII ( anti-Pope ) ( Maurice Bourdin ) confuse him, who served from 1118 to 1121 as a counterpart to the Pope (as regularly counted ) Popes Gelasius II, or Calixtus II. He belonged to the Augustinian canons.

On March 14, 1158 by Pope Adrian IV took over as Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina to the College of Cardinals. From 1178 to 1187 he was chancellor of the Roman Church and as such Datar of papal privileges. He is the author of the oldest stylistic statement for notaries from the environment of the papal chancery, in which the theory of the Cursus was developed as a stylistic device for papal documents. 1172 he took part as papal legate at the Council of Avranches, the acquitted Henry II of England by the murder of Thomas Becket.

He was the successor of Urban III. elected on October 21, 1187 in Ferrara, dedicated on October 25, 1187 to the Pope and died of fever on 17 December of the same year.

With the Papal bull Audita tremendi from October 29, 1187, he called on the Third Crusade.

He was succeeded by Clement III.
