Pope Hyginus

Hyginus (* in Greece, possibly Athens, † 142 in Rome) was bishop of Rome (about 138-142 ).

About Hyginus almost nothing has survived. He was said to be Athenian and a philosopher, or the son of an Athenian philosopher. During his pontificate later excluded from the church Gnostic Valentinus and Kerdon came to Rome, to give himself a semblance of connection with the Pope. He is regarded as martyr, but there is no source for it today. His feast day is 11 January.
