Pope John XIV

John XIV, actually Peter Canepanova, († 20 August 984 in Rome) was Pope from 983 to 984

He was from 966 bishop of Pavia and was raised in November or early December 983 under the reformatory influence of Otto II, the Lord Chancellor, he was the Pope. When he died later in the same year, the 974 banished to Byzantium anti-pope Boniface VII was able to return to Rome in April 984 and had John capture using the Crescentii and imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo, where he starved to death on 20 August 984. Otto III. was as king under the regency of his mother Theophano succeeded his late father, Emperor Otto II

Through subsequent misinterpretation of its "active" rule and his imprisonment as two pontificates of different people a confusion arose in the count of the Popes of his name. Hence the name John XX was. for correction of the alleged error is not used.

John XIV took off his actual name and chose a Pope names because he felt himself to be unworthy to act under his birth name Peter and to stand thus on a par with the Apostle Peter.
