Pope Mark

Marcus ( † October 7 336) was in the year 336 for a few months Bishop of Rome. Prior to his election on January 18 he had been bishop of Ostia.

It is reported that he was Roman, but about his life little is known. There is evidence that the early lists of bishops and martyrs, known as Depositio episcoparum and Depositio martyrum, during his pontificate have been created. According to the Liber Pontificalis he is said to have also been determined in the future should the Bishop of Ostia to consecrate the new bishop of Rome. His term falls in a period of violent disputes over Arianism.

He built two basilicas in Rome, the titulus Marci and Santa Balbina on the Via Ardeatina. In the latter church he was buried.

The feast day of Saint Marcus is 7 October. He was and is often confused with the Roman martyrs Marcus (fixed June 18 ), near which he was buried.
