Pope Paul II

Paul II ( born February 23, 1417 when Venice, † July 26, 1471 in Rome), real name Pietro Barbo, was from August 30, 1464 until his death Pope of the Catholic Church.

Life

Pietro Barbo was the son of a wealthy Venetian merchant, his mother Polixena Condulmer was a sister of Pope Eugene IV Early benefited Pietro Barbo from the pontificate of his uncle, who sent him good private teacher.

In 1440, Pope Eugenius IV appointed his nephew Pietro Barbo cardinal of Santa Maria Nuova in Rome. He was also Apostolic prothonotary, archdeacon of Bologna, from 1440 Bishop of Cervia, from 1451 Bishop of Vicenza and from 1459 bishop of Padua. Of his numerous benefices was Pietro Barbo the Roman Palazzo Venezia built.

On August 30, 1464 Conclave elected him after three days of election period in the Vatican the new pope. Actually, Pietro Barbo, Pope Formosus II wanted to call, but the Cardinals persuaded him not to use that name. His second choice was the name of Pope Marcus II, but also the name of the evangelist did not appear the Cardinals be appropriate, since they are as apostles generally uncommon name as Pope names ( with Pope Marcus I. it was the real name ). So they convinced Pietro Barbo, the name of Pope Paul II to assume the acceptable appeared as the name of the Apostle of the Gentiles, which is not part of the group of twelve, and not to the evangelists. ( The Pope name John refers to John the Baptist. )

As is usual at this time, the cardinals by him demanded a capitulation, but Pope Paul II recanted his capitulation, which obliged him to be calling a general council and the war against the Turks, immediately after his coronation. Pope Paul II has openly against the Roman Academy and eventually also picked up the Abbreviatorenkollegium.

From today's perspective, Pope Paul II is referred to as an anti- humanist: he was of Latin not powerful nor a friend of education. He introduces the biretta of the Cardinals and put 1470 on the Jubilee every 25 years fixed.

He died on July 26, 1471 and was buried in the Vatican Grottoes.
