Pope Pelagius I

Pelagius I. ( † 3 ( 4? ) March 561 in Rome) was bishop of Rome on April 16, 556 until his death. He came from a noble Roman family.

Finding himself in the Three Chapters controversy - with his predecessor Vigilius - had joined the imperial condemnation of the " Three Chapters ", he was rejected by the Western clergy. His appointment against the will of the majority of the Roman clergy was only possible through the help of the Byzantine rulers.

They gave him the blame for the death of his predecessor Vigilius. In order to purify himself, he had to make an appropriate oath in the church on the cross and gospel.

While there, he managed to win the recognition of the Romans in the subsequent period through reconstruction work at the prostrate after the conquest by the Goths city. However, the separation of the northern Italian dioceses he could not prevent ( Three Chapters schism ).
