Pope Romanus

Romanus was Pope in the year 897. The exact election day is unknown. The enthronement took place in August 897 instead, the end of the pontificate is dated November 897, being not clear whether Romanus died - in this case he would might have been poisoned - or was deposed, in which case he should have probably continued to live as a monk.

The choice of Romanus, who had previously been cardinal priest of St. Peter in Chains was made, in the light of the arguments about the legality of the pontificate of Formosus, which culminated in the body of the Synod in the summer of 897. This Romanus ' predecessor Stephen VI. conducted mock trial fierce followers of Formosus, at whose request the enthronement Romanus should be done.

During his brief pontificate Romanus declared the official acts of his predecessor void; However, the rehabilitation of Formosus was his successor, Pope Theodore II reserved.
