Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria

Shenouda III. of Alexandria (Arabic شنودة, DMG Šinūda; born August 3, 1923 in Manfalut as Nazir Gayed Rafail / نظير جيد روفائيل / Nazir Ǧayyid Rawfā ʾ il, † March 17, 2012 in Cairo ) was the 117th Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria the chair of St. Mark ( Coptic Church ).

Life

In 1947 he completed his studies in philosophy at the University of Cairo. He then completed a postgraduate course in archeology, and has also trained as a reserve officer. He then studied at the Coptic Orthodox seminary theology and completed his studies in 1949. He was a lecturer for " exegesis and dogmatic theology " at the seminary and employee and editor of the Sunday Schools Magazine.

In 1954, he appeared as a monk in the monastery of Deir es- Suryan in the Wadi Natrun and was ordained a priest in 1955. After seven years, he was appointed Bishop Anba Shenouda generally consecrated in September 1962 (no diocese ).

After the death of the Pope Kirellos VI. he was on 31 October 1971 for the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church and the 117th successor to the patriarchal see of St. Mark, Pope Shenouda III as. chosen, as which he was enthroned on 14 November 1971.

On March 17, 2012 Shenouda died at 88 years of old age, and was buried on 20 March 2012 in a desert monastery in Wadi Natrun north Egyptian. His successor as Patriarch of Alexandria was founded in November 2012 Tawadros II

Work

After his enthronement, the dogmatic unity of the Copts paved with the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Shenouda III. dedicated mainly for the construction of the educational system, the expansion of the monastic system, the spread of the Coptic Orthodox Church and the massive intensification of the pastoral care of the Copts in the diaspora. Of great importance is also the church that he built the British Orthodox Church in the Patriarchate of Saint Mark.
