Pope Stephen IX

Stephen IX. (X. ), originally Friedrich von Lothringen (* around 1020 in Lorraine, † March 29, 1058 in Florence ) was a German pope from August 1057 to his death.

Life

Father of Frederick was Gozelo I, Duke of Lower Lorraine.

Friedrich was of Leo IX. brought to Rome in 1050 and entrusted with important functions. So he had the office of a chancellor of the Roman Church (since March 9, 1051 ), a cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica (since 1049 ), a deacon and librarian of the Roman Church (since June 10, 1051 ) and the cardinal presbyter of San Crisogono dressed (since June 14, 1057 ). At the beginning of the Oriental schism Frederick was abbot at Montecassino.

Even if his choice - his enthronement was on August 3, 1057 - originally was pope without the consent of the civil power, Empress Agnes finally accepted the result. Frederick of Lorraine chose the name Stephen IX. Pope names.

In his brief pontificate Stephen sat in the tradition of his former conveyor Leo IX. for internal church reform, especially celibacy and the prohibition of simony one.

He died in 1058 in Florence during the planning of a campaign against the Normans. He was buried in the local cathedral of Santa Reparata, which was later built over by the present Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

On his deathbed, he had determined that should only be started with the election of his successor, when Hildebrand, the longtime contender and later Pope Gregory VII, had returned from his trip to Germany.
