Pope Zosimus

Zosimus (* in the 4th century, † December 26 418 ) was from 417 until his death Pope.

According to the Liber Pontificalis he is probably born in Greece, and thus was not part of the Roman clergy. The Greek name Zosimus means: the most alive. His Catholic feast day is day of his death, December 26.

In order to expand its own authority and to strengthen the supremacy of the episcopal see of Rome, he assisted Bishop Patroclus of Arles in its efforts to enforce the claim to the papal vicariate in Gaul. To violent reactions on the part of the North African Church came when he took back the condemnation of Pelagius and Caelestius by his predecessor Pope Innocent I.. Following the protests, he revoked his decision and condemned Pelagius Caelestius and in March 418 again.
