Popkum First Nation

The Popkum or Popkum First Nation are with 8 members recognized one of the smallest First Nations, as the Indians of Canada are called. They live on the lower Fraser in British Columbia, approximately 18 km north-east of Chilliwack, 3 km north-east of Bridal Veil Falls. They belong culturally to the coastal Salish language to the Cowichan and are one of the 24 state-recognized tribes, to the Sto: Lo belong.

History

The Popkum received from the Commissioner Gilbert Malcolm Sproat Indian Land on June 16, 1879 awarded two reserves, which included together 149.7 ha, and on the left bank of the Fraser were. The original reserve should be established jointly for Hope, Ohamil, Peters, Skawahlook, Union Bar, Yale Bands of Indians and Popkum. This included Seabird Iceland, where in 1958 the Committee of the Privy Council own Seabird Iceland Indian band created.

In 1977, 21 of 24 to the Sto: Lo counting strains, the Sto: lo Declaration, which was the basis for contract negotiations with Canada and British Columbia. 1995 began negotiations with the province for land rights, called the BC treaty process, from which, however, withdrew four strains.

2005 created two separate tribal councils ( tribal councils ), with eleven tribes, among them the Popkum, to remain at the Sto: Lo Nation decided, while eight strains the Sto: lo Tribal Council founded. Of these, eleven were once again but only seven continued the negotiations with the government of the province. The eight tribes of the Sto: lo Tribal Council also not take part in the negotiations. So overall negotiate only 7 of the 24 Sto: Lo strains with British Columbia, including the Popkum.
