Poppo von Osterna

Poppo of Osterna (* 1200 in Osternohe at Nuremberg in Franconia, † November 6, probably in 1267 ) the ninth Master of the Teutonic Knights.

Life

Poppo was a son of the Count of Wertheim 1227 and entered into the Teutonic Order.

He was one of the first knights of the order, which ushered in 1230 crossed the Vistula and the subjugation and Christianization of Prussia. 1241 and 1244 to 1246 he was Landmeister in Prussia. The fact that he had participated in the Battle of Legnica Mongols against Orda Khan in 1241 and was killed in this by the Mongols, is a later legend. 1244 he brought reinforcements from Austria to Prussia and fought successfully against Duke Swantopolk of Pomerania.

1252/53 he was elected Grand Master of the Order. As is usual for high master, he came to pass then probably to the Order's headquarters in Palestine, but it dropped again in 1254 in Prussia. In 1256 he resigned from the office of Grand Master in 1264 and received the Commandery of Regensburg as a retreat.

It can be documented evidence in Regensburg last time on June 9, 1267. His death is indicated by the 6th of November. He probably died in Silesia, in any event, he was buried in the St. Jacob Church in Wroclaw.
