The Poprad - Tatry Medzinárodné Letisko (Slovak, English Poprad Tatry - International Airport ) is an international airport is about 5 km west of the center of Poprad, and lies about 15 km south of the High Tatras. N.M. With 718 m Poprad Tatry - is the highest in Central Europe Airport.

History

West of VeLka ( now a district of Poprad ) 1938 was built a military airfield. The civilian flight operations began in 1943 with the route Bratislava - Poprad Prešov Sliac. By 1970, there were no paved runways. It was only the Nordic Ski World Championships in Štrbské Pleso a concrete runway and new office buildings were completed.

Average of 70,000 passengers were in the period from 1970 to 1990 annually handled, using the year 1976, with 156,000 people leader.

In the 1970s and 1980s Czechoslovak Airlines and Air Inter flew scheduled throughout the year from here to Bratislava, Prague and Berlin. In the summer, in addition to Burgas, in the winter to Dresden, Leipzig and Helsinki. Other airlines were to Poprad, as Dan - Air, Condor, Malev or Britannia.

After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, reduced the number of passengers, for political and economic reasons, to 10-15,000 people per year. And in 1996, the commercial air traffic was stopped for the time being. In early 2000, the commercial air traffic was seasonal again, taken by Aero Most. Currently scheduled flights are carried out by the CSA to Prague again.

Importance

Today, the airport is an important part of the local economy (including international companies such as Whirlpool, Alcatel and Embraco, the factories operate in the area ) and tourism. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (call sign Kristof 3) here has a base and taking on, inter alia, Tasks such as mountain rescue. ( See also: Air Ambulance in Slovakia)
