Population Registration Act, 1950

The Population Registration Act, Act No. 30/1950 ( German about: Population Registration Act ) was a law passed in 1950 by the South African apartheid government, which had a comprehensive population registration with new identity documents for all residents of South Africa to target. To its implementation and data collection methods according to the Census Act of 1910 ( Act No. 2/1910 ) were used. Occurred on 7 July 1950 in force and served to further expand the racial segregation policy.

General

The Population Registration Act was formed together with the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act (enacted in 1949) and the Immorality Act ( 1950 expands the already enacted law in 1927 and 1957 re- tightened ) a basic law with discriminatory under the policy of apartheid.

The jurisdiction of this law lay with the Ministry of Interior. The delegated technical authority was Director of Census.

The Population Registration Act was repealed by the South African Parliament on 17 June 1991.

Significant Laws content

The concern was a categorization of the population and the related issue of an identity card, the identity card ( roughly equivalent to the identity card ), including an identification number ( identity number ) in accordance with section 6 of the Act. Section 5

According to section 5 of this Act every South African was classified according to an "ethnic group or another ." The law saw three different people groups: White, Coloured and Native, in the original " ... white person, a colored person or a native, .... ".

A description and definition of the " classification " of the groups Coloureds and Natives was the Governor - General by notification in the Official Gazette ( Gazette ), including subsequent modifications. Section 8

In section 8 was determined that in every district administrative office a copy of the official list of inhabitants was publicly unmount. It contained the following personal details:

Section 13
