Poc Pocomam

Pocomam also Poqomam is a Mayan language spoken by indigenous peoples, the Pocomames same name, in Guatemala.

As a Mayan language Pocomam is classified as a subgroup of Pocom to which the similar Pocomchí is counted.

In 1995, the number of speakers and speakers of this language with about 31,000, mainly in Alta Verapaz and Jalapa (Guatemala), estimated.

Previously Pocomam was also spoken in the west of El Salvador and Honduras.

The classic Pocomames cultivated maize and beans, pottery making and produced charcoal, their homes were isolated from bahareque and Adobe; there were individual settlements around churches or town halls.

Within the Pocoman can Pocomam under a central, which is spoken in Chinautla [ wp 1] and in El Salvador, and a Pocomam oriental, which is spoken in San Luis Jilotepeque [ wp 2] in the department of Jalapa, and a Pocomam Suroriental, which in Palín, [ wp 3] is a municipality in the department of Escuintla spoken, can be distinguished.

National language

After the reform of Article 143 of the Constitution of Guatemala Pocoman is an officially recognized language. It is normalized written by the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala and with a Latin alphabet.
