Porbandar ( Gujarati: પોરબંદર, Porabandar ) is a coastal town on the peninsula of Saurashtra in Gujarat. It is the capital of the district of Porbandar and has approximately 152,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).
Excavations at Porbandar have demonstrated colonization of the area already 3500 years ago during the Late Harappan culture. Porbandar was the capital of a Rajput princely state, whose name was since 1785 Porbandar.
Main livelihood is fishing; the largest employer in this industry is also exporting companies Silver Seafood. Porbandar has an airport and a seaport, which was only built in the late 20th century.
Porbandar is the birthplace of Indian independence fighter Mohandas Gandhi ( Mahatma called ) also of tourist interest. His birth place is developed as a place of rest.
