Pori Jazz

Pori Jazz is an international jazz festival in Kirjurinluoto, Pori, in southwestern Finland, takes place every summer. The first Pori Jazz Festival was organized 66 eV in July 1966 by the Association of Pori Jazz. The festival is one of the largest jazz festivals in Europe, and because of the number of visitors and the tickets sold, the biggest festival in Finland. The festival not only jazz is played, but also other genres such as blues, soul, funk, hip -hop, R & B and reggae are heard. Numerous world- famous musicians (such as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Kanye West) have played at Pori Jazz.

History

The first festival year

As organizers of the Jazz Festival was founded in May 1966, the Pori Jazz 66 eV. The first Pori Jazz Festival was held from 16 to 17 July 1966 in Pori instead. The beginning of the Pori Jazz was simple: During the two days of the festival there were two concerts and a jam session. In the main concert on Saturday included performances by Ted Curson, Carola, George Russell Workshop Band and many other artists. At midnight after the main concert a jam session.

On Sunday afternoon a concert was held in the open air. About 300 jazz fans came to Kirjurinluoto to hear the music. This Sunday afternoon was felt to be so successful, that was called the Sunday concert " picnic concert " in the next twenty years. The first Pori Jazz Festival had about 1,300 visitors. The proceeds of the festival was 379 Finnish marks, but after deduction of expenses remained 49 marks. Because of the positive feedback, the event has since been organized every year.

1966-1990

In the following years the number of visitors grew steadily. In 1970 there were a total audience of 18,000 people. Twenty years later (1990 ) there were already 60,000 and 162,000 festival visitors in 2010.

The duration of the event has changed during the years. Pori Jazz 1966 lasted two days in 1967 just three days in 1975 for four days and the early 1980s five days. Since 1985, the concerts will be spread over nine days.

The history of the Pori Jazz is divided into different periods. The first three years were the celebrations for outspoken jazz friends. Thanks growing popularity began in 1969, other music lovers to attend the festival.

In the 1970s, pop and rock music has been very popular in the world and jazz music had to fight for their future. In these years, Pori Jazz was almost the only way to hear first-class jazz in Finland. The late 1970s, the future of the Pori Jazz Festival because of the poor financial situation was very uncertain. In the 1980s, the program rapidly expanded to other musical styles. At the end of the decade, the festival witnessed yet a second time, financial difficulties.

Pori Jazz today

Pori Jazz was the first and long the only jazz festival in Finland. Today Pori Jazz is a versatile meeting place for all who love the rhythmic music. According to an economic study is Pori Jazz the most interesting and most popular summer event in Finland. In the 1990s and 2000s the number of visitors has continued to grow. Visited in 2010 a total of 155,000 people the festival. On the free concerts, there were 95,000 listeners on the paid 60,000 listeners.

Concerts

Today's Pori Jazz Festival culminates in the main concerts to Sunday in Kirjurinluoto Arena on Kirjurinluoto take place from Thursday.
