Porlamar

Porlamar is a town on the Venezuelan island of Margarita. It is the largest city and economic center of the island.
History
In 1526, the Governor Isabel Manrique sent the envoy Pedro de Villárdiga and Pedro Margarita Alegría according to erect a fortress in the Guaraguaobucht. Around 1536 the priest Francisco de Villacorta founded the town of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción nearby. In 1545 the fortress was finished. The village was destroyed by pirates in 1555 and Lope de Aguirre in 1561. The inhabitants moved to the valley of Santa Lucía, where now La Asunción would arise. There was a settlement that was named as Puerto de la Mar and Puerto Viejo. It slowly developed the village of Porlamar.

Porlamar has its own international airport ( IATA code: PMV). In the vicinity is the prison of San Antonio.
