Poropanchax

Norman lampeye ( Poropanchax normani )

Poropanchax is a lampeye genus of the family Poeciliidae, which occurs in West Africa from Senegal to Cameroon and the Central African Republic. The most widespread species, Poropanchax normani, still lives in the basin of the White Nile and in a relict population in Bokou Lake Chad.

Features

Poropanchax species have a more or less elongated body and are 2-5 cm long. Characteristic of the class is a channel of the sensory system with two or three pores on the supraorbital ( a bone above the eye socket) and a sensory channel with five pores on the Praeoperculare. In juveniles, the pores are open or only partially closed and close with age. Dorsal, anal and pelvic fins of males are often longer than those of the females.
