Port-de- Paix on the map of Haiti

Port-de- Paix is a seaport and the main town in the department of Nord-Ouest in the north of Haiti. It is located at Les Trois Rivières, as well as the Canal de la Totue opposite the island of Ile de la Tortue, at an altitude of 36 meters above sea level. In addition to the port and the airport are located in Port-de- Paix four schools, a college, a cathedral, three more churches and a hospital. The low bergische Erkrath maintains patenschaftliche relations with the city of Port -de- Paix.

History

Christopher Columbus discovered Hispaniola on December 5, 1492, and found gold deposits after searching the ports of Port-de- Paix (then Valparaiso ), Baid'Acal (formerly Thomas ), Point Picolet (then Punta Santa ).

In the time of the Spanish and French rule in 1801 Napoleon Bonaparte sent General Charles Leclerc d' Ostin with 25,000 troops to Haiti, where he arrived in February 1802. The general now proceeded, to conquer Le Cap Port de Paix as a base of operations, which also succeeded on 9 February 1802.

During the Revolution in 2004 to conquer on February 24 insurgents the port city. This led to looting and fires. 2008 Port -de- Paix was inundated by a hurricane.
