Port Egmont was the first British base on the Falkland Islands. He lay on the island of Iceland Saunders on natural harbor Port Egmont.

History

In 1765 Commodore John Byron landed at Port Egmont on West Falkland, and took the island group on behalf of the British Crown in possession, a year later founded Captain John McBride in Port Egmont, the first British settlement. Four years later, in 1770, the Spaniards expelled the British from Port Egmont, which brought both countries to the brink of war. After long negotiations between Britain, France and Spain it came to understanding 1771, which resulted in Port Egmont again fell to the British. For economic reasons and because of the outbreak of the American Revolution, the British withdrew in 1774, but did not give up their claim. For this reason, they left behind a flag and a lead plaque. In 1780 the settlement was destroyed before 1832, the British returned to Port Egmont. In the same year Britain took over the entire island group in possession.
