Port Ellen

Port Ellen (originally Leòdamas; gaelic Port Ìlein ) is the second largest town on Islay Bowmore. It belongs to the county of Argyll (Scotland) and has about 830 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ). Port Ellen was founded in 1821 by Walter Frederick Campbell, who named the city after the name of his wife. The settlement surrounding the bay hole Leòdamais, a natural harbor. Campbell is also responsible for the construction of the Port Ellen lighthouse which marks the entrance standing on the opposite side of the bay on the Oa peninsula south of Kilnaughton Bay in the harbor. In the city of Port Ellen several historic settlements have been merged. This includes the settlement Tighcargman, which was situated in the north.

In Port Ellen is a ferry port, which is primarily served by the Company Caledonian MacBrayne and Islay connects with the Scottish mainland on the Kintyre peninsula. In addition to Port Askaig, it is the only port of the island, which is serviced regularly. Produced intermittently 1885-1983 the north of the town whiskey distillery Port Ellen in the city. Even today there is a large malt house.

In Port Ellen, former British Defense Secretary George Robertson was born on 12 April 1946.
