Port Huron Flags

The Port Huron Flags were an American ice hockey franchise in the International Hockey League from Port Huron, Michigan. The venue of the flag and its successor clubs was the McMorran Arena.

History

The Port Huron Flags were founded in 1962 as a franchise of the International Hockey League. In the 1965/66 season the flags won for the first time in their club's history the Turner Cup, the championship of the IHL. This success could repeat the club in 1971. In the same year, the team was renamed the Port Huron Wings. This renaming was the consequence of the partnership with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. As of now, the Port Huron Wings were the farm team of the Red Wings. Under the new name the Wings were able to defend their title from last season and win the Turner Cup for the third time.

After the termination of the partnership with the Detroit Red Wings after the season of 1973/74, the club named again to Port Huron Flags. The flags passed to 1981 and were at this time in 1979 with 95 points occupy both the first place in the North Division and the main round of the IHL. During the 1980/81 season they were the farm team of the Buffalo Sabres. In the summer of 1981, the Port Huron Flags were dissolved.
