Port Kembla, New South Wales

Port Kembla is an industrial suburb about eight kilometers south of the city of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of the Australian state of New South Wales and has about 4,500 inhabitants ( 2006 census ). The name " Kembla " is borrowed from the language of the natives and means about as much as " a lot of wild birds ". In Port Kembla is a seaport and one of the largest industrial complexes in Australia, once known for the steelworks of BHP. Already in 1770 James Cook has captured the coast here cartographically.
