Port Loko District

Port Loko is a district of Sierra Leone with about 454,000 inhabitants. It belongs to the province of Northern and is located in the northwest of the country, on the Atlantic coast. Its capital is Port Loko, other cities are Lunsar, Lungi, Tintanfore and the port city Pepel. The district is divided into 11 chiefdoms ( chiefdoms ).

Port Loko covers an area of ​​5719 km ². At the district also includes the islands Pepel, Kagbeli, Puluntunt, Makonkoma Bunce and Iceland. The highest elevation is the Maluntu ( Okra Hill ) with 177 meters.

Most important ethnic groups in the Port Loko district are the Temne and Susu, predominant religion is Islam. The economy in Port Loko is based on small-scale mining and the cultivation of staple food (rice, cassava, sweet potatoes ).

The district decreed in 2006 over 95 healthcare facilities, including two government hospitals, a mission hospital, three mission hospitals, an NGO clinic and a private clinic. 2005 1.3% of the residents were HIV -positive. 2004/2005 there were 463 primary and 24 secondary schools.
