The port of Porto de Tubarão is a place in Brazil in the district of Vitória capital of the state of Espírito Santo. The port consists of a bulk terminal for the transshipment of iron ore and has a large depth, the, allowed here to create it also larger bulk carriers, bulk carriers. It is now one of the largest Erzexporthäfen the world.

History

The port was inaugurated in 1966 and is called, operated by the largest mining company in Brazil, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, also VALE. With the Baú the port of Porto de Tubarão was started in 1962, when the mining company Vale negotiated the first long-term contracts with customers in Japan and Germany. The port construction was paid for exclusively by taxpayers' money, because VALE was not privatized at that time and was in state ownership. The construction of the port was a technical challenge in terms of the dimensions. The design was realized in cooperation with Japanese companies and introduced new methods into the Loading of iron ore in the seaport. A direct consequence of this was the construction of super ships that surpassed all previously unknown sizes. The new Verladekonzepte could also partly due to liquid bulk ( petroleum ) is transferred. The ore terminal is directly connected to a railway line, which is owned by VALE and the iron ore is transported directly from the mining belt of Minas Gerais zoom. In addition, VALE has now with the company Docenave the third largest fleet of bulk carriers worldwide.

The construction of the port of Porto de Tubarão went through some difficulties in terms of its financing. Promised U.S. loans were canceled again, but ultimately succeeded to the Brazilian State to procure the necessary funds for this purpose. Thanks to the foresight of the designers of the port, who interpreted the size of the ore terminal for ships that do not yet exist at that time (up to 300,000 GRT) of Porto de Tubarão is still one of the main axes of the Brazilian Erzumschlags. The pioneering the design moved to 1966 a series of follow-up projects and new investments by themselves, who settled in the area of Porto de Tubarão:

  • Celulose Nipo Brasileira S. A. - Cenibra (cellulose and paper)
  • Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão ( steel industry)
  • ALBRAS - Alunorte (aluminum),
  • Mineração da Serra Geral ( iron ore processing )
  • CSI Califórnia Steel Industries / joint venture with Kawasaki VALE (steel processing )

Environment

The establishment of industries in the area of Vitória caused severe environmental damage, as was thought in particular in the first years of production, little is known about this topic. The black dust in the region became famous because he caused severe health problems in the population of interest. But problems in the field of Meeresverschutzung by the high number of port calls and Gewässerverschutzungen by the resident industries were not missing and by now have big problems in the region.
