History

Until the construction of the modern port, the ships had to anchor 100 meters off the coast and the goods were loaded and unloaded, as the water was only three to four feet deep on large boats. In strong winds, the ships had to seek refuge even in another bay. 1888, 10 years after independence from the Ottoman Empire, the Bulgarian government decided then the construction and expansion of ports of Burgas and Varna in.

With the port construction of Varna a nameless corporation was contracted after a competitive tender, the Ivan Groseb ( Bulg Иван Грозеб ) and Jiří prošek was conducted. The construction of the Black Sea port of Varna was the culmination of the construction of the brothers prošek (next to Juri was also his brother Bogdan prošek in Bulgaria confirmed). With the planning of the new port director of the port of Marseille (Old Port ), the French engineer Gerard was appointed, who was known as an experienced specialist in this field in Europe.

The harbor was officially opened on 18 May in 1906 in presence of the Bulgarian Prince Ferdinand I, three years after the port of Burgas. As the two brothers had died in 1905 at a distance of one month, there were significant problems with the completion of the work.

The port consisted of quay walls with a total length of 731 meters, warehouses, lifting equipment, office buildings and two breakwaters of 1220 m in length, 200 m wide passage between. The basin was 8 to 10 m deep and covered an area of 21 ha, the port got a railway connection, at the same time the railway line Varna -Sofia has been built and created a national transportation system for North Bulgaria. Cross the railway line Varna - Ruse the goods could be brought to the Danube and for further transport to Central Europe.

In 1976 the company was founded in Varna port complex ( Bulg Пристанищен комплекс - Варна ) that the ports of Varna ( East and West), from Devnya (about 35 km west of Varna away), Balchik (about 50 km north of Varna ) of LeSport (about 15 km west of Varna ) and of Kavarna (60 km north ) with included. This is the largest port in the country was created. Until the 1980s, about half of the seaborne cargo handling Bulgaria was settled by the company. Cereals, dairy products and livestock are still among the most important export products. In the 90s, however, was followed by a restructuring and separation of the harbor areas in Kavarna and LeSport into independent companies. Since 2006, the port of Balchik operated also independently.
