Port Royal is an American city in the U.S. state of South Carolina in Beaufort County.

The total area is 13.4 km ², of which 10.1 km ² on land and 3.3 km ² water surface.

History

1514 was sent from Hispaniola to explore the shores of America by Pedro de Salazar de Lucas Allyon. He landed near Port Royal. 1525 Spain sent another expedition to this area in order to build a fortress.

1562 landed a group of French Huguenots under Jean Ribault in the region and established a fortress named Charles Forte. Three years later the settlement of a Spanish squadron was disbanded. From 1710 the British colonized the area. On August 27, 1893 hurricane devastated Port Royal difficult, while several thousand people died.

In 1959 it was decided to operate the port of the village again active, including the export of kaolin, which meant a significant boost for the city.
