Port Shepstone is situated at the mouth of one of the largest rivers on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, the Umzimkulu ( the great home of all rivers). Port Shepstone, located 120 kilometers south of Durban, is the administrative and economic center and also the formation of the southern Natal. 2011, the city had 35,633 inhabitants.

Different companies have settled here, including a sugar mill, a Kalkaufbereitungsanlage and a Travertinbruch. In addition, the district also timbers are obtained, acacia bark and harvested subtropical fruits.

History

Port Shepstone was established in the year 1867, when travertine was found nearby. The city was named after Theophilus Shepstone, a member of the Government in Natal during the 1880s. On 8 May 1880, the first coastal ship landed in built by William Bazley harbor. Two years later, in 1882, moved a group of 246 Norwegian immigrants in the area. They played a major role in the development of the surrounding area. After 1901, the railway line had been opened to Durban, no longer needed at the Port, which also led to the fact that the estuary silted up again and made a re- use the port impossible.
