Port St. Lucie is a city in St. Lucie County in the U.S. state of Florida with 164 603 inhabitants ( 2010).
Geography
Port St. Lucie is located at the mouth of the St. Lucie River in the Indian River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway, just off the coast of the Atlantic. The city is located about 160 kilometers north of Miami and 180 miles south-east of Orlando.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, the then 164 603 inhabitants spread over 70 877 households. The population density was 841.5 inh. / Km ². 74.3 % of the population were white, 16.3% African American, 0.4% Native American and 2.0% of Asian Americans. 4.0% were members of other ethnic groups and 3.0% of different ethnicities. 18.4 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 30.0 % of all households lived in 35.8 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 73.9 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.69 persons and the average family size is 3.08 people.
25.0 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.3% were 20-39 years old, 28.2% were 40-59 years old and 21.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 40 years. 48.6 % of the population were male and 51.4 % female.
The average annual income was $ 49,310, while 12.6 % of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 88.06 % of the population spoke Spanish 6.60 % and 5.34% had a different mother tongue.
