Porta Nomentana

The Porta Nomentana was a gate in the built 271-275 AD Aurelian Walls in Rome. The gate was in the ancient starting point of the ancient Via Nomentana that since the year 1564 removed their output from the 75 meters after a restructuring of the whole area and laying of the road and by Michelangelo on behalf of Pius VI. built Porta Pia takes.

The porta Nomentana gives a good impression of the original gates of the Aurelian Walls as it has experienced as a single gate of the wall no major modifications or changes in its surface. Only with the construction of the Porta Pia, the passage was sealed with raw brick masonry. The 2.90 meters wide and 5.50 meters high gatehouse had only one passage which was flanked by two two-storey towers. The surface was veneered with fine brick masonry. About towers and gate chamber, the system had an armored with battlements flat roof.

As with many other gatehouses of the Aurelian Walls, Porta Salaria about, ancient tombs were also built at this gate, which are partly superficial to detect. In 1827, therefore, the southern tower was laid down in order to expose the underneath grave of Quintus Haterius can, where one can assume the Suffektkonsul of the year 5 BC, the influential and often mentioned in Suetonius and Tacitus, senator and rhetorician. Under the north tower, the remains of a rectangular brick tomb are preserved today.

Until the 13th century was for the gate of the ancient name in use. But then changed this to Porta S. Agnese, as the gate opened the main route to the Basilica of S. Agnese fuori le mura.
