Portencross

Port Cross is a village in the Scottish Unitary Authority North Ayrshire. It lies on the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde about ten kilometers south of Largs and 17 kilometers northwest of Irvine. The hamlet consists of only a few farms and residential buildings. Portencross is located off the A78 and is accessed via a spur road. In 1961 Portencross counted 63 inhabitants.

In 1306 came the lands in the possession of Robert Boyd of Kilmarnock and thus the clan Boyd, who used it until 1737. During the 14th century, directly on the shore fortress Portincross Castle was built and probably revised several times in the following centuries. Today it is only preserved as a ruin.
