Portillo (Chile)

Portillo is a ski resort in Chile at 2860 m altitude. The nearest major town is Los Andes.

The winter sports area at Portillo is one of the largest in South America. There the 19th Alpine Ski World was held from August 5 to 14 place in 1966, the first ( and so far only ) World Championship in the Southern Hemisphere. The ski season usually lasts from mid-June to late September.

Portillo is located above the tree line on the mountain pass Paso de la Cumbre del Tunel below the Cristo Redentor.
