Portimão [ puɾtimɐu ] is a city ( Cidade ) in the Algarve region, Portugal. It is the seat of the homonymous district. June 30, 2011 had the circle 55 818 inhabitants in an area of 182.1 km ².

History

The origins of human settlement in the district date back to the Neolithic period. Even from the time of the Roman residents a variety have been preserved traces, including vessels, coins, and remains of buildings. The Arabs left their particular botanical and architectural traces, including at today been converted into chapels buildings or distinctive chimneys in building houses.

After the Reconquest, the town was populated as Vila Nova de Portimão until the 15th century under King D.Afonso V. again appreciably. As part of the emerging Portuguese voyages of discovery, the importance of this harbor town grew. After the destruction that the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 suffered the place to Portimão recovered only slowly. Only in the 19th century, with the development of the food industry (especially canneries, dried fruits and fishing and processing of catches), the place got a major development thrust. 1924 Portimão became a town ( Cidade ), by Manuel Teixeira Gomes President, who himself came from Portimão.

In 1975, the Alvor Agreement on the independence of the former Portuguese possession Angola was closed in the Parish of Alvor.

Traffic

The nearest airport for smaller aircraft is operated by the City Municipal de Portimão Aerodromo, which is about seven kilometers away. Also air shows such as the Portimão Air Festival are held here.

The place is connected by the railway line Linha do Algarve Lagos, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António.

Cheap road connections are rather close to the coast via the N125 and alternatively some domestic via the A22 motorway to the north ( eg Lisbon on the A2 at Paderne ), east (eg Faro) and the West, for example, to Lagos or Sagres.

Since 2008, there is again a ferry to Madeira and the Canary Islands. Operator is the Spanish company Naviera Armas.

Tourism

Portimão is a resort and tourist center of the western Algarve. The town has a marina and numerous beaches of Praia da Rocha which is due to its rock formations one of the most famous in the Algarve.

Motorsport

In Portimão is located with the new Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, a modern circuit. Here Superbike World Championship and A1 Grand Prix races are held since 2009. Furthermore, here Formula 1 tests took place.

The city was the destination of the first stage of the Rally Dakar 2006.

Football

The place is home to the football club Portimonense Sporting Clube, in the second Portuguese top, the Segunda Liga currently plays. It carries out its home matches at Estádio Municipal de Portimão city.

The Praia da Rocha beach in Portimão is the venue for the annual international beach soccer tournament Mundialito de Futebol de Praia.

Sailing

With the Portimão Global Ocean Race an internationally renowned sailing regatta is regularly organized around the world here.
