Port Laoise (pronounced [ pɔrtli ː ʃə ], formerly Maryborough, English and Portlaoise, older Irish spelling Port Laoighise, GV " The Fort of Laois " ) is located in the southeastern county seat of County Laois in the Republic of Ireland. She counted 18,270 inhabitants in 2011.

History

The city was founded by Queen Mary in 1556 as "The Fort of Maryborough " and renamed the occasion of the Irish independence in 1922 in Port Laoise.

The city

The city is the economic center of the Irish Midlands dar. Nearby you both the high security prison in Portlaoise Jail, where the majority of the paramilitary prisoners are detained, as well as the Midlands Prison. Both facilities are among the largest employers in the area.

Traffic situation

Port Laoise is located on a main transport hub of the Irish transport network. The recent construction of the M7 motorway, which runs past the city has reduced the volume of traffic in the city itself. The city has a Train Station, with trains to Dublin and Cork.

Environment

Very close to the town is the Rock of Dunamase, an ancient Celtic fortress. Further facilities include Emo Court, one in the 18th century built by James Gandon House, the Ballyfin House, now a private school, and Mountmellick around Portlaoise.

Policy

Rotimi Adebari was elected on 27 June 2007 the Mayor of Port Laoise. He is from Nigeria, from where he fled for religious reasons. He found asylum in Ireland in 2000. In 2004 he was elected as an Independent in the city council.
