Covering an area of 50.7 km ² live 1035 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011), this corresponds to a population density of 20.4 inhabitants / km ². The place is located in the Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, a nature reserve which runs along the entire south-western coast of Portugal.

Porto Covo has still an old village core, which is animated in the main holiday season of holiday guests. Around the place new buildings for accommodation and private summer villas have been built. Porto Covo has a tiny harbor for the local fishing industry.

There are several small beaches reached by stairs that are heavily visited during the summer bathers. Before Porto Covo, the Ilha do Pessegueiro is with an old fort
