Porto Viejo is an Ecuadorian city with 280 586 inhabitants ( 2013).

The capital of the province of Manabi is located about 30 kilometers from the Pacific coast inland. It is an important center of livestock and the cultivation of coffee and cotton.

The city was founded on March 12, 1535 by the Spanish captain Francisco Pacheco as Villanueva de San Gregorio de Porto Viejo.

Porto Viejo is known for its former tamarind plantations. Therefore, it is still "City of Royal Tamarind Trees" (Ciudad de los Reales Tamarindos ) called. Today in Ecuador Ceibo named kapok dominate the landscape.
