Portsmouth Direct Line

As Portsmouth Direct Line is called a rail link between Woking on the South Western Main Line and Portsmouth on the West Coastway Line. In her courses of the South West Trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour.

Importance

The Portsmouth Direct Line shortens the way between Portsmouth and London from considerably. In addition to the Direct Line, there are detours on the Brighton Main Line - West Coastway Line and South Western Main Line Eastleigh to Fareham Line West Coastway Line.

The trains run between the SWT Waterloo and Woking on the SWML before they then operate on the PDL to Havant, and from there via a branch line of the WCL to Portsmouth Harbour.

History

The first section, Woking - Guildford was opened to traffic on May 5, 1845. Was the builder of London and South Western Railway (L & SWR ). On October 15, 1849 Godalming was reached before the line was completed in the 1850s, with the gap closing to Havant on the WCL.

1859 went the distance during the Battle of Havant on competing with the L & SWR London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB & SCR) over which thereby plus the Brighton Main Line was given a second main line from London to the south.

1937, the nearly 80 -kilometer-long line was electrified.
