Portsmouth is the former capital of Dominica at the Indian River in the north of the island of Dominica. Portsmouth has 3,633 inhabitants and is the second largest municipality in the island state. The city belongs to the Parish of Saint John. Located on a peninsula of the village is the National Park Cabrits National Park. Portsmouth has its own sea port next to Roseau. 1760 Portsmouth should be the capital of the island, but when there broke out malaria, Roseau was preferred.
