Portuguese Chess Federation

The Federação Portuguesa de Xadrez ( FPX, port. for: Portuguese Chess Federation ) is the governing body for chess in Portugal. The FPX is headquartered in Lisbon.

History

In particular, in the 14th and 15th centuries, chess became popular in Portugal. King D. João I praised the game of chess beginning of the 14th century in his book Livro de Montaria as an excellent military training, and D. João II liked to play, especially when traveling. On January 22, 1927, the Federação Portuguesa de Xadrez was founded in Lisbon, the first president was Dr. Maria João da Costa. After she had frequent from 1951 to 1954 based in the university city of Coimbra, she has since returned to the capital of a resident, now in a self- acquired buildings.

The fourth World Chess Champion, the Russian Alekhine died in 1946 in his Portuguese exile in Estoril.

Organization

The FPX is a member of the 1927 World Chess Federation FIDE, where the geographic zone 1.1, and 1.1 in the subzone c associated since its inception.

In 2013, the FPX has 2584 organized active player, even from non-organized in the FPX clubs. 105 clubs are even a member of the FPX.

In the FPX the chess federations of the Portuguese districts are organized. Currently (2013 ) there are 14 district associations:

  • Associação de Xadrez de Lisboa (Lisbon )
  • Associação de Xadrez do Porto (Porto)
  • Associação de Xadrez de Santarém (Santarém )
  • Associação de Xadrez do Distrito de Setúbal (Setúbal )
  • Associação de Xadrez de Vila Real ( Vila Real)

In addition, the Correspondence Chess Association Associação Portuguesa de Xadrez por Correspondencia ( APXC ) is organized in the FPX.

Competitions

The FPX will host a variety of nationwide competitions, including men's, women's and youth competitions, trophies, national championships, and preliminary decisions to international competitions. In addition, in the districts of Porto and Leiria purely regional championships are played.

The participation of Portugal in international competitions, such as the Chess Olympiad is organized by the FPX.

The FPX also directs a nationwide league play chess clubs, Campeonatos Nacionais por Equipas. The highest league is the Primeira Divisão (German: first league ), the second and third league including a subordinate one.
