The Portuguese Escudo ( German: Shield ) was the currency of Portugal prior to the introduction of the euro. The ISO 4217 code is PTE.
History
The escudo was used by the Portuguese in 1914 and replaced the real previously used for several centuries.
The escudo was subdivided into 100 centavos. The recording of prices was done with the Cifrão ( graphically similar to the dollar sign, always made with two strokes ) between the value of escudos and centavos. So meant 25 $ 00 at a price of 25 escudos. Because of inflation, the centavo coins were, however, already no longer in use, as were converted to euros.
Higher amounts were usually given in Contos, an unofficial unit of account, which corresponded to 1000 escudos. Due to the relatively simple conversion factor, the term Conto is still in use, namely equivalent to five euros ( minimally rounded up).
On 1 January 1999 the exchange rate was fixed to the euro 200.482 escudos, on 1 January 2002, the Escudomünzen and notes were replaced by the euro. Coins are already no longer exchanged. Certificates are not exchanged until 28 February 2022.
Before the introduction of the euro following denominations were outstanding:
Coins: 1; 5; 10; 20; 50; 100; 200 Escudos
Certificates
Notes: 500; 1000; 2000; 5000; 10000 escudos
