This had violent clashes with the still extensive and sections of the military political left the country the effect to deepen the results of the 1974 revolution, in contrast, but at least wanted to preserve.

These arguments about the " burdens " or " achievements" of the revolution also led to a direct confrontation between the moderate left -leaning President António Ramalho Eanes and Prime Minister Sá Carneiro. In contrast, the parties of the center -right coalition had the election results not only confirmed in the parliamentary elections of October 5, 1980 of December 1979, but once again improved, because the AD was able to expand its leadership position and again the absolute to reach majority of seats.

As in the past, acted the opposition is not uniform. The moderate left got together in the formed in June 1980 " Republican and Socialist Front" (FRS ). Under the leadership of the Socialist Party worked in the FRS two smaller social democratic groups, oued and ASDI, with which, however, both politically survived the 80s.

In addition, as has already occurred in the parliamentary elections last year, the alliance Vereintes people as an alliance of the Communist Party (PCP ) and the Portuguese Democratic Movement - Democratic Election Commission (MPD / CDE ) to.
