The Portuguese Podengo is a by the Fédération Internationale Cynologique recognized breed of dog from Portugal ( FCI Group 5, Section 7, Standard No. 94).

Origin and History

The Portuguese Podengo is classified as wind- dog -like Mediterranean hunting dogs, which can be found in different races or local shocks on the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. In contrast to the Spanish spelling podenco is the spelling used in the Podengo Portuguese and Galician. The Portuguese Podengo was originally a occurring in numerous sizes and coat types Landrace, which was common in the north and east of Portugal. Only in 1933 was begun, the population present systematically identify and classify six varieties in the still common today. Since 1954 is the official breed standard for the Portuguese Podengo.

Description

The Portuguese Podengo is bred in three sizes, each available as wire-haired and the short haired variety. The colors are yellow, fawn ( in all shades from light to very dark) and black ( diluted or washed ), solid color with or without white markings or white with markings.

Portuguese Podengo Grande ( large)

With 55 to 70 cm and 20 to 30 kg of the Podengo Grande is the largest representative of the breed and also the rarest. It is grown mainly in the east of the country.

Portuguese Podengo Medio (medium )

At a height at withers 40-54 cm Podengo Medio of 16 to 20 kg heavy. The distribution is mainly in the north of Portugal.

Portuguese Podengo Pequeno ( small)

The Podengo Pequeno is the smallest variety of 20 to 30 cm and 4 to 6 kg. Originally mainly found in the center of the country, he enjoys his next hunting use now growing in popularity as a pet.

Use

As the Spanish hounds, as well as the Portuguese Podengo is mainly used for hunting wild rabbits.
