Portumna

Portumna ( Irish: Port Omna, dt: " landing place of the oak " ) is a city in County Galway in the west central inland of the Republic of Ireland.

Portumna is located in the extreme southeast of the county of Galway, on the border with County Tipperary, west of the entrance of the River Shannon at Lough Derg. The population of the town was established in the Census 2006, 1377 people.

Portumna is located on the runs in the north-south direction N65 national road, regional road branches off from the N352 here westwards towards Gort and N18.

Because of its location on the River Shannon and Lough Derg in Portumna is a stopping point for many anglers and boat tourists; there are several ports on the river or on the lake. The Shannon runs here in two fairways to an island in the middle of the river around and is crossed by a road bridge completed in 1911, which also represents the connection between the County Galway and North Tipperary.

In a large park in the southern outskirts of the village and Lough Derg are among others the remains of Portumna Priory (also known as Portumna Portumna Abbey Friary or ), an original Cistercian monastery from the 13th century, which was acquired by 1426 by the Dominicans. Also south of the town is Portumna Castle, built in the early 17th century ( before 1618 ), which is partially open to the public.
