Postal codes in Lithuania

In Lithuania, five-digit zip codes are used. As in Germany, a distinction is made between plunging, mailbox and wholesale ZIP codes, and there are postal codes for post offices.

However, the extra zip cover much smaller spatial units from than in Germany: In rural areas there is a zip code for one or a few villages or settlements, even within a political community divided. In the towns and large villages a zip code covers one or a few streets. Typically, the first 2 digits designate a district ( rajonas ), eg 83 for Pakruojis. The lowest numbers are for the post offices, the Zustellpostleitzahlen start at 101 Large districts received several first digits ( eg 21 and 25 for Trakai ).

Former system

Before independence, the six -digit postal codes Soviet were used. After initially remained the structure unchanged, there were only the first two places, that were uniform throughout Lithuania, omitted. The postal codes were thus four digits.
