History

The beginnings of Postbank go back to the 1860s. It was then established as part of the New Zealand Post Office under the name of New Zealand Post Office Savings Bank. As part of the privatization of public enterprises under the Postal Services Act 1987, the banking services from the New Zealand Post Office were spun, the government founded on 24 February 1987, the Post Office Bank Limited and led them public under the name of Postbank on.

1989 sold the government the Postbank to Australia and New Zealand Banking Group ( ANZ), the integrated their banking transactions gradually into their business model. On 1 December 1994, the Post Office Bank was finally resolved. The brand name Postbank disappeared on the New Zealand market with it forever.

In 2001, the then Labour government decided under Helen Clark again a state-owned bank in the market to establish. She was named Kiwibank and operates today as a State -Owned Enterprise and a subsidiary of New Zealand Post in the market.
