Posten Ã…land

Åland AB is the postal company to belong to Finland Åland Islands. The company is like a public company organized, but is subject to the Government of Åland.

History

For a long time there was the business of mail only in the mail transport between Finland and Sweden. The first post offices were opened in Kastelholm Eckerö. In 1866, then a post office in Mariehamn was built. 1809 the postal system was taken over by the Russian Empire, then by the Grand Duchy of Finland.

Many of the post offices were opened at the beginning of the 20th century. The Republic of Finland took over finally in 1917 the postal system. Åland received its own postage stamps until 1984, which were issued prior to 31 December 1992 in collaboration with the Finnish Post. On 1 January 1993 the authority of Åland took over the post operation and the post of the government of the islands was assumed.
