The Potaro is a river in the Republic of Guyana in South America.

It rises on Mount Ayanganna in the Pakaraima Mountains ( Guiana Highlands ) on the border with Brazil. South of Omai opens the Potaro after 225 km and a slope of 1800 meters above sea level in the Essequibo. In the course of the river Potaro are the Kaieteur and Amatuk Falls. In recent years, the Potaro is exposed to the gold mining at its river considerable environmental pollution.

1908 was made by the German - American biologist Carl Eigenmann an expedition along the Potaro and Essequibo and documented 336 fish species occurring here.
