Potočari

Potocari is a village in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in Republika Srpska, about six miles northwest of the town of Srebrenica to its municipal area it belongs to. The village consists of two sub- types, which is situated in the valley of the Drina Creek Križevica Donji Potocari and the further west and higher Gornji Potocari. In the census of 1991 4.338 inhabitants were counted, of which 93 per cent were Bosniaks and seven percent belonged to other ethnic groups, mainly the Serbs.

Wartime

During the Bosnian War, the village was located in the enclave of Srebrenica. Here was located on the site of a disused car battery factory, the Dutch UN battalion " Dutchbat ". Just as in all other places in the enclave, the population increased, because the village took up refugees from neighboring parts of Bosnia. In July 1995, the Serb forces committed here and at other crime scenes in the neighborhood of the Srebrenica massacre.

Post-war period

The main monument and cemetery for the genocide of Srebrenica are in Potocari. The largest donation for the construction of the monument was the U.S. government. In 2003 it was inaugurated by the former U.S. president Bill Clinton.
