Pottiaceae

Wall - rotation -moss ( Tortula muralis )

The Pottiaceae are the eponymous family of moss - order Pottiales.

Features

The mosses of this family are typical akrokarpe mosses that form dense cushions in different sizes. The leaves have different shapes, but a strong midrib is always present. In many species, this emerges as a spike tip or a glass of hair from the leaf. In almost all species, the leaf cells in the upper part of the leaf are strongly papillose and round, while the cells are usually smooth, water-white and rectangular in the lower part of the leaf.

The capsule stalk is usually extended and smooth. The capsule is usually are oval to cylindrical. Less often, the capsule is sunk, and kleistokarp. The capsule has 16 peristome, the peristome may be absent. The teeth are sitting on a low or high basilar membrane and are of different shape.

Occurrence

Many Pottiaceae prefer very light -rich locations. Among them are species that tolerate severe drought and strong sunlight. Many Potticeae grow on very chalky or very salty locations.
